Meet Mark Fala, Head of Accounting

Furey Team

At Furey, we’re lucky to have a team full of experts who bring their own unique experiences and passion for helping startups grow. Today, we’re excited to introduce Mark Fala, who heads up our accounting team.

Mark’s journey into accounting is one many can relate to. Growing up, he always had an interest in business but wasn’t sure where it would take him. That all changed when he discovered accounting, eventually leading him to Furey.

We sat down with Mark to talk about what makes Furey’s accounting team stand out, the challenges high-growth startups face, and how collaboration and professional growth are woven into our team culture. He also gives us a glimpse into life outside of work. Let’s dive in!

Where are you based?

Mark: Haddonfield, NJ

What is your role at Furey?

Mark: I lead the accounting team, oversee client accounts, and ensure smooth operations within our department. My role involves coaching our accounting team and aligning with other departments to drive Furey’s strategic objectives.

What inspired you to pursue a career in accounting? How has your journey led you to Furey?

Mark: As a first-generation college student from an entrepreneurial, blue-collar family, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but knew I was drawn to business. The more I learned about accounting, the more it clicked for me. It’s the foundation of every business, and it’s amazing how much you can understand about a company just by looking at how they make and spend money.

I came to Furey because I’ve always been interested in starting my own business but felt I still had a lot to learn. What I love about working here is the balance: I get the freedom to take ownership of my work, but I’m also surrounded by an incredible team. Startups have always inspired me for the same reasons. I love the boldness it takes to build something from nothing. It’s such a great contrast to the accountant’s mindset, which tends to be more measured—a perfect yin and yang.

Favorite project to date?

Mark: One of my first projects at Furey involved a client preparing for acquisition. They faced challenges with customer invoicing and revenue recognition, and I worked closely with their team to develop a holistic solution. This not only helped them through the diligence process but ultimately contributed to their successful acquisition. It was a rewarding introduction to the work we do at Furey, and it was a whole new world for me at the time which was pretty cool.

What do you see as the biggest trends or challenges in accounting for high-growth startups, and how does Furey address them?

Mark: A major challenge for startups is understanding the evolving nature of their accounting needs as they scale. A newly founded company has much different requirements than a Series B-stage business. What Furey does well is building customized, scalable solutions that meet clients’ current needs while preparing them for rapid growth which is critical for any startup.

‍What do you think sets Furey’s accounting team apart from others in the industry?

Mark: Customer empathy is one of Furey’s core values, and our accounting team embodies this fully. We genuinely care about our clients' success and strive to build trust from day one. This dedication to client relationships and results is core to our approach and something our clients notice and value.

‍How does Furey foster collaboration and professional growth within the accounting team?

Mark: When I joined Furey, I was drawn to the chance to learn and collaborate with a talented team, and that’s still true today. The variety of experiences we share makes one year here feel like several years’ worth of growth somewhere else. It’s been an incredible journey of professional development, and as we continue to grow as a company, we’re always looking for new ways to create opportunities for our team.

‍What’s your favorite part about working at Furey?

Mark: The opportunity to learn every day. Whether from our leadership, team, or clients, Furey challenges you to continuously expand your knowledge and perspective. This culture of learning influences everything we do and creates an inspiring, growth-focused environment. I’ve been at Furey for over four and a half years and I am still learning every day.

What's something you're currently learning?

Mark: As we continue to grow our accounting team, I’m learning more about the recruiting process. It's essentially everything leading up to the interview. While I’ve always been involved in interviewing candidates, I’m now learning the behind-the-scenes aspects of sourcing and evaluating prospective talent. It’s been an interesting new area to explore.

Any accounting tools you're loving right now?

Mark: Furey TechOps recently rolled out an updated version of our bank and credit card tool. It automates coding, uploading, and reconciling transactions across the various accounting platforms our clients use. What’s really impressive is how the team combined deep accounting know-how with sharp tech expertise to build something that takes an already efficient process to the next level. For startups juggling multiple systems, this kind of automation is a huge win.

Current favorite book or show?

Mark: While not current, one of my all-time favorite books is Shoe Dog by Phil Knight, the founder of Nike. It’s a great story about his path in building the company from one crazy idea into what it has become today. I love autobiographical books that combine the human experience with themes like business, travel, food, and music.

‍How do you unwind?

Mark: These days, most of my free time is spent chasing around my two year old daughter, Cecilia. When I am not doing that, I am taking on some new home renovation project since we recently bought a fixer upper that we are currently in the process of making our own. Essentially, I am just leaning into the transition to full dad mode and that’s perfectly okay with me.
